Lower Limb Prosthetics

Lower Limb Prosthetics
A lower limb prosthesis refers to a prosthesis that replaces any part of the lower limb to restore the functional and/or cosmetic purpose of the lower limb. This may include artificial components that replace the hip, thigh, knee, ankle and foot.
At Xtremity we ensure each individual with limb loss deserves to receive the tailored prosthetic design with utmost care and customized solutions to help you regain your strength and power with “Mobility and Beyond”. We have highly skilled Prosthetists available for you with access to the latest Prosthetic technologies, not limited to the most advanced socket design and latest prosthetic knee/feet design. We also provide the best 3D printed orthotics and prosthetics in Dubai.

Ortho-Prosthesis
Congenital defects of lower limb
An ortho-prosthesis is an amalgamation of both orthotic and Prosthetic components, combined together to form a device that has both orthotic and prosthetic design features.
It compensates for the length deficit of the deformed leg (prosthesis portion) and, if necessary, supports it correctly (orthosis portion).
Ortho-prostheses are formed by a prosthetic foot and, if necessary, a prosthetic/orthotic knee joint. The main difference between prostheses and ortho-prostheses is that an ortho-prosthesis is intended to hold a limb instead of a stump.
This limb can be severely decimated in length and volume.
The treatment of patients with congenital malformation/deformities of the lower limbs is often very complex overall and technically very demanding for an efficient functional outcome.

The following conditions require an Ortho-prostheses:
- Tibial/Fibular Hemimelia
- Tibial aplasia-ectrodactyly syndrome
- Proximal femoral focal deficiency
- Rotation-plasty
- Other congenital malformations that lead to shortening of the lower limb.

Partial Foot Prosthesis
There are six main types of partial foot amputations that can be helped through the use of partial foot prosthesis: Toe Amputation; Ray Amputation; Trans metatarsal; Lisfranc; Chopart; and Symes
Partial feet provide functional and cosmetic solutions within one device. Each partial foot can encompass a combination of materials with specific properties to aid comfort and mobility.
Our prosthetist will utilise unique scanning procedures to develop your prosthesis. Soft silicone gel pads can be used to relieve pressure in sensitive areas while medical grade silicones protect vulnerable skin.

Syme’s or Ankle Disarticulation Prosthesis
This amputation level has the advantage of a long lever arm and allows some distal weight-bearing without a prosthesis.
The distal residual limb is bulbous due to the presence of the malleoli. Because of the increased length of the residual limb, fitting a prosthetic foot can be challenging.
Fortunately, there are several options of low-profile feet available at Xtremity to match your requirements.

Above Knee Prosthesis
An above-knee (AK) or transfemoral (TF) prosthesis is custom made for a person who has had AK or TF amputation. The prosthesis consists of a custom made socket, liner, knee, pylon, and foot. Sometimes the prosthesis may consist of a sleeve or other harness, depending on the suspension system used for that patient. Xtremist is a renowned provider of above-knee prosthetics in Dubai.

Standard Features of an Above Knee Prosthesis
- Socket – This is the part of the artificial limb that your stump (residual limb) fits into. It can be made of thermoplastic or carbon fibre reinforced laminated material.
- Knee Joint – There are various types of the knee joint. Some are designed to swing; others are designed to stay in a locked position for walking but can be unlocked for sitting.
- Pylon – This lies between the prosthetic knee joint and the prosthetic foot. It is made of strong lightweight materials such as carbon fibre, aluminium or titanium.
- Prosthetic Foot & Ankle – There are many different types of feet and ankles available. Your individual needs will influence the choice made.
- Cosmesis/Foam Cover – This is a cosmetic cover that gives shape and appearance to the limb. Most artificial limbs are covered with a continuous foam tube shaped to match your remaining limb as closely as possible. It may then be covered with stockings. We also have options of 3D printed cosmetic covers in many designs and colours.
Hip Disarticulation/ Hemi-Pelvectomy Prosthesis
Hip disarticulation prostheses are prescribed when the amputation is done through the Hip joint, in this case, the hip joint is completely removed. When a part of the Pelvic bone is removed, it is termed hemipelvectomy.
In either case, fitting the custom-designed prosthesis is very challenging, at Xtremity our prosthetists are highly skilled and trained to assist with even the most complicated cases.
The socket encases bilateral iliac crests in the hip disarticulation patient and utilizes abdominal compression in the hemipelvectomy patient. These prostheses must include a hip joint, which may be a ball-and-socket joint or single-axis.
